A Modern Furniture Shop

A new furniture shop. This building has five floors full of all kinds of imported furniture, mostly from Southeast Asia. Many furniture shops have cropped up all over the city, but they are not all as nice as this one. As the living standard goes up, people are spending on buying new furniture and new houses. It used to be that when people bought a flat, they would take along their furniture from their old one. Then as people earned more and more, they got custom furniture made when they moved into a new house. As imported furniture started becoming available, now people are furnishing their new houses and flats with it. However, housing costs quite a lot more now as prices have gone up insanely. It costs more to buy a flat or a house than in many places in the US!!

Well, not necessarily. Sometimes they are and sometimes not. Some of them are good, but they are not surrounded by equally nice buildings so the view outside the window is disappointing. Some are indeed in nice neighborhoods but they still have water shortage and electricity cuts. So, overall it is ridiculous to have to pay more than the US! Some 5-star hotels, especially in Bangalore cost more than 5-star hotels in Manhattan. Even so they are fully booked because so many people come to Bangalore to do business from abroad. The hotels are really nice but as soon as you step out, there are bad roads, bad traffic, pollution, dirt, dust and so on.

Wow. Cool looking building. Perhaps time to visit IKEA?

Thanks for visiting my blog and for your comments. We don't have IKEA here yet. :( Perhaps they will open one soon because many foreign chains are opening their shops in India. In the meantime, I read that people are copying IKEA design

@arun - This particular store is on the Nampalli Station Road (on the right side when you are going from Abids to Nampally - it is a one way street anyway).

You may also be interested in checking out a couple of other good
multi-storied ones. One is called Home Town. It is by the Big Bazaar people. The nice thing about Home Town is that it shows the furniture sets in mock rooms (kitchen, bedroom, etc) which gives you a good idea about how it will look. Home Town is next to the Hyderabad Central Mall. The other one is called @Home or something similar and it is between Hotel Taj Krishna and the Care Hospital. The Godrej Lifespace shop on Abids also has some good quality furniture.
